Devon animal attractions remain open during bluetongue outbreak

Animal attractions and zoos in Devon, including Paignton Zoo, Totnes Rare Breeds Farm, and The Big Sheep, remain open despite a bluetongue outbreak in the county. The disease, which is spread by biting midges, affects ruminants and camelids such as sheep, cattle, goats, deer, llamas, and alpacas, with sheep being the most severely impacted.

Since July 10, 304 cases have been diagnosed on local farms. While the virus can cause fever, swelling, and death in livestock, it does not affect humans.

To mitigate risks, local attractions have implemented precautions. Paignton Zoo has already vaccinated its sheep and yaks and is evaluating vaccination programs for other potentially at-risk species. The zoo is also adhering to guidelines from the Animal and Plant Health Agency (APHA) and coordinating with European colleagues.
