Devon & Cornwall Police Warn of Scams Using Stolen Personal Data

Devon & Cornwall Police have issued a warning after recent data breaches exposed personal details such as names, addresses, dates of birth and email addresses. Criminals are using this information to send convincing emails, text messages and phone calls that appear legitimate.

Residents are advised to verify any request through official channels, avoid clicking unknown links, and never share passwords, PINs, bank details or security codes. The force recommends changing passwords immediately, enabling two‑step or multi‑factor authentication, and regularly monitoring online and bank accounts for unusual activity.

Suspicious emails can be forwarded to the National Cyber Security Centre, and scam texts should be sent to 7726 (free). Fraud victims should report to Action Fraud online or call 0300 123 2040. The police also encourage people to share the advice with friends and family, especially those less confident online.
