Devon farmers face economic pressure from Bluetongue virus outbreak

Farmers in Devon are facing significant distress and financial uncertainty due to a Bluetongue Virus Serotype 3 outbreak that has been affecting livestock since July. At a recent Devon County Council meeting, representatives reported that the disease is causing livestock deaths and increasing costs related to veterinary care, vaccinations, and fallen stock disposal.

Stephen Dennis of the Farming Community Network stated that many farmers are 'completely exhausted' by the demands of caring for sick animals, especially when combined with previous pressures from drought and forage shortages. Beyond immediate care, there are long-term concerns regarding livestock fertility in rams and bulls, which could lead to reduced lamb and calf numbers in future seasons.

Economic modelling presented to the council suggests that the impact on farming and the wider rural economy could reach millions of pounds. While the virus poses no risk to human health, it continues to create significant uncertainty for breeding flocks and herds.
