Devon librarians face uncertainty amid potential staffing cuts
Libraries Unlimited, the organisation managing 50 libraries in the Devon County Council area, has launched a staff consultation that may lead to a reduction in the number of librarians.
The organization is considering changes to its staffing structure to manage finances and future operations. This development follows a previous dispute regarding library hours and opening times. While Devon County Council increased library funding in May following a public consultation of 25,500 responses, officials have clarified that the current staffing consultation is a separate matter conducted by a third-party organisation.
During a recent council cabinet meeting, some councillors requested that the staffing restructure be delayed until it could be scrutinized by the council. However, senior officers maintained that the council cannot intervene in consultations held by third-party entities.
