Devon moves to unitary authorities as government approves reorganisation

The UK government has confirmed a four‑unitary authority plan for Devon, adopting the proposal originally put forward by Exeter City Council and Plymouth City Council. Under the plan the existing district councils will be replaced, and the new authority is expected to be called Devon Council, covering the Devon Coast and Countryside area.

Both Dartmouth Town Council and Exmouth Town Council have issued statements reassuring residents that their roles will continue unchanged. Dartmouth Council highlighted its intent to represent local interests as the new structure develops, while Exmouth Town Council, citing Town Clerk Lisa Bowman, said the council will remain the closest tier of government to residents and may even take on additional services once the transition details are clearer.
