Devon Public Health launches guide for students moving to university

Devon's Public Health team has released an online guide to assist parents and carers in supporting young people transitioning to college, university, or independent living. The resource aims to facilitate essential conversations regarding mental wellbeing, personal safety, relationships, and financial management.

The guide provides practical information on healthcare, sexual health, alcohol and drug use, and healthy living. It also emphasizes the importance of medical preparations, such as ensuring vaccinations are up to date. Specifically, some first-time university students and those in eligible residential further education settings may qualify for the new MenB vaccination programme to protect against meningococcal disease.

Councillor Cheryl Cottle-Hunkin, Devon County Council's cabinet member for public health, communities and equality, noted that while moving away offers new opportunities, the transition can be daunting for both students and their families as they navigate new responsibilities.
