DEWA advances clean energy projects in Dubai

Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) is integrating environmental stewardship and biodiversity protection into its clean energy infrastructure projects. This approach aligns with the Dubai Clean Energy Strategy 2050 and the Dubai Net Zero Carbon Emissions Strategy 2050, which aim to provide 100% of Dubai’s power production capacity from clean sources by 2050.

A primary initiative is the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park. Currently operating at a capacity of 3,860 MW, the park is projected to exceed 8,000 MW by 2030, surpassing its previous 5,000 MW target. This expansion is expected to raise the clean energy share in Dubai’s energy mix to 36%.

Additionally, DEWA is developing the Hatta pumped-storage hydroelectric power plant. As the first project of its kind in the GCC, it features a generation capacity of 250 MW and a storage capacity of 1,500 MWh. The facility is designed for an 80-year operational lifespan to support grid reliability and energy storage. DEWA utilizes Environmental Impact Assessments and circular economy principles to manage resource efficiency and waste throughout its project lifecycles.
