DFG-VK calls for shift in German security policy at federal congress

The German Peace Society – United Conscientious Objectors (DFG-VK) concluded its 25th federal congress in Stuttgart with a call for a fundamental shift in German foreign and security policy. Under the motto ‘Peace-capable instead of war-ready!’, delegates addressed rising militarization and increased military spending.

A primary focus of the congress was opposition to the potential reintroduction of compulsory military service. The organization expressed support for growing protests among students and young people against military service obligations, pledging to expand counseling services and support structures for conscientious objectors. To recognize this activism, the school strike movement was awarded the Ludwig-Baumann Prize.

In their final declaration, delegates criticized the massive increase in military expenditures, warning of the social consequences of rearmament. They urged that public funds be redirected toward social security, education, health, and climate protection. The DFG-VK also reaffirmed international solidarity with deserters and called for the protection and safe reception of those evading military service.
