DFW Airport cancels Islamic washing station plan after Governor Abbott's intervention
Dallas Fort Worth International Airport (DFW) has canceled plans to install Islamic ablution (wudu) washing stations in Terminal D restrooms following significant political backlash. The proposal, which would have added specialized foot-washing stations to existing men’s and women’s restrooms, was initially estimated to cost $300,000, though airport officials later clarified the actual cost would be closer to $120,000 and funded by airport revenue rather than taxpayer dollars.
Texas Governor Greg Abbott intervened by declaring the planned facilities “illegal” and accusing the airport of religious discrimination. Abbott has ordered a review of state grants awarded to both DFW and Houston’s George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH) for possible revocation and has referred both airports to the U.S. Department of Transportation for investigation. While DFW stated the project was being evaluated for operational benefits and customer service impacts, the airport accelerated its review due to heightened public interest and ultimately decided not to proceed.
Some reports noted that while the new stations were scrapped, DFW has maintained existing ablution facilities within its Terminal D interfaith chapel since 2019.
