DGCA orders pilot drug testing in India amid SpiceJet financial scrutiny
The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has ordered a one-time drug screening for all airline pilots in India, to be completed between August 1, 2026, and July 31, 2027. This directive follows an incident on an Air India flight from Phuket to Delhi on August 4, where the pilot-in-command tested positive for a psychoactive substance after the aircraft experienced a sudden altitude change that injured 24 people.
Civil Aviation Minister K Rammohan Naidu stated that the DGCA expects to finalize revised regulations regarding psychoactive substance testing for flight crews by the end of this month. Currently, regulations only mandate random testing for 10 percent of pilots and air traffic controllers annually.
Separately, the Indian government and the DGCA are monitoring the financial and operational status of budget carrier SpiceJet. The airline has seen a decline in domestic market share, dropping to 1.6 percent in July. Reports indicate the airline has faced challenges with salary payments to staff since May. In response to operational needs, SpiceJet announced it has finalized lease agreements for 20 aircraft, including 15 Boeing and 5 Airbus planes, to be inducted between mid-October and mid-November.
