DGFiP cyberattacks compromise data of 678,000 people in France

The French Directorate General of Public Finances (DGFiP) has confirmed a series of three successive cyberattacks occurring in June, July, and August. These breaches have compromised the sensitive data of approximately 678,000 individuals and professionals, including 350,000 taxpayers.

Stolen information includes tax identifiers, civil status, and contact details such as postal, telephone, and electronic addresses. The most significant breach was facilitated by the hijacking of an employee's credentials. The cybercriminal group ZeroBytes has claimed responsibility for the massive theft.

In response, Minister of Public Accounts David Amiel issued a public apology, stating the situation is 'unbearable for the French.' The Paris prosecutor's office has launched an investigation into fraudulent data extraction and criminal conspiracy. The DGFiP has begun notifying affected parties via mail, detailing the specific types of data compromised and necessary precautions.
