DGT clarifies driving license renewal rules for drivers over 65

The Spanish Directorate-General for Traffic (DGT) has clarified the regulations regarding driving license renewals for individuals over the age of 65. Reaching this age does not result in an automatic loss of driving privileges, but it does change the renewal frequency. For licenses including AM, A1, A2, A, and B (covering mopeds, motorcycles, and passenger cars), the validity period is reduced from ten years to five years once a driver turns 65.

The primary objective of this change is to increase the frequency of medical assessments to ensure road safety. While the medical examination criteria remain the same for all ages, healthcare professionals may reduce the validity period of a license if they detect a condition that could worsen over time.

Contrary to common misconceptions, having a specific medical diagnosis does not automatically disqualify a person from driving. The Real Automóvil Club de España (RACE) noted that the determining factor is whether a health condition affects the physical or psychological capacities required to drive safely. Additionally, drivers over the age of 70 are exempt from paying the renewal fee.
