Spain DGT deploys 130 wireless laser speed radars

The Spanish Directorate-General for Traffic (DGT) has significantly increased its enforcement capabilities, deploying a fleet of 130 wireless, nearly undetectable 'Veloláser' devices across the country. These portable laser-based cameras are highly effective due to their small size, lack of visible flash, and ability to transmit real-time images via 4G/Wi-Fi to the Guardia Civil.

Speeding penalties in Spain range from 100 to 600 euros and can result in the loss of driving points. In 2025, the DGT issued a record 6.1 million fines. Enforcement authority varies by location: the DGT and Guardia Civil manage interurban roads and highways, while local police handle urban areas.

Technical margins for speed measurement are governed by metrological regulations (Order ICT/155/2020) to account for instrument uncertainty. For speeds above 100 km/h, the maximum permitted error for fixed or section radars is 3% following repair or conformity assessment, while mobile vehicle-mounted radars allow for a 5% margin. These technical margins do not grant drivers permission to exceed the posted legal speed limits.
