DGT to implement variable speed limits and average speed cameras in Spain
Spain’s Directorate-General for Traffic (DGT) is implementing new traffic management systems to enhance road safety. Starting October 1, a variable speed limit system will be piloted on the AP-7 and AP-2 highways in Catalonia. This system allows authorities to adjust maximum speeds—potentially reducing them from 120 km/h to as low as 60 km/h—based on real-time conditions such as weather, accidents, roadworks, or obstacles. The AP-2 pilot specifically focuses on managing visibility issues caused by fog.
Additionally, the DGT is utilizing bidirectional average speed cameras. Unlike traditional fixed radars that measure speed at a single point, these devices calculate a vehicle's average speed over a specific stretch of road by recording license plates at both the entry and exit points. This method prevents drivers from avoiding fines by simply slowing down at the camera location. Fines for these infractions start at 100 euros.
