DGT warns of alcohol fines for driving the morning after consumption

The Spanish Directorate-General for Traffic (DGT) has issued a warning regarding drivers who believe they are safe to operate vehicles the morning after consuming alcohol. Authorities emphasize that sleeping, showering, or drinking coffee does not accelerate the body's elimination of alcohol, and many drivers may still test positive for alcohol the following day.

Sanctions for exceeding legal limits range from 500 to 1,000 euros and the loss of four to six driving points. The legal limits are set at 0.15 mg/l of exhaled air for novice and professional drivers, and 0.25 mg/l for all other drivers. If a driver exceeds 0.60 mg/l of exhaled air or 1.2 grams per liter of blood, the infraction is classified as a criminal offense under Article 379.2 of the Penal Code.

Regarding illegal drugs, the DGT notes that any detectable presence of such substances in the body is grounds for a sanction.
