DGT warns of fines for driving without headlights in rain

The Spanish Directorate-General for Traffic (DGT) has warned drivers that failing to use low-beam headlights during rain or low visibility can result in fines of up to 200 euros. Many drivers mistakenly rely on automatic lighting systems, which may fail to activate headlights if the sensors perceive sufficient ambient light despite heavy rainfall.

Under the Law on Road Safety, driving without mandatory lighting in rain or fog is classified as a serious infraction. While the fine typically reaches 200 euros, it can escalate to 600 euros if the behavior is deemed to pose an evident risk to traffic safety. Although this specific infraction does not result in the loss of driver's license points, the DGT notes that insurance companies may cite negligence and refuse coverage in the event of an accident caused by inadequate visibility.
