Dhaka air quality reaches unhealthy levels due to high pollution

Air quality in Dhaka remains a significant health concern, with recent data from IQAir indicating that pollution levels are unhealthy for the general population. On September 8, Dhaka recorded an Air Quality Index (AQI) of 156, placing it among the most polluted cities globally. Specific areas within the city, such as Baridhara Park Road, reported even higher AQI scores of 175.

The primary driver of this pollution is PM2.5, fine particulate matter that can penetrate deep into the lungs and enter the bloodstream, increasing risks of asthma, bronchitis, and heart disease. Contributing factors include unregulated emissions from vehicles and industry, construction dust, and nearby brick kilns.

Globally, Kuching, Malaysia, recorded the highest pollution levels with an AQI of 252, categorized as very unhealthy. Other highly polluted cities include Kinshasa, Kuala Lumpur, Hanoi, and Lahore. While Dhaka's ranking has fluctuated, its air quality continues to pose risks to sensitive groups and the general public.
