Dhaka airport workers remanded after 9.34kg gold seizure

A Dhaka court has placed two airport employees, Manik Mia and Mijanur Rahman, on a five-day remand following the seizure of 9.34kg of gold at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport.

Customs Intelligence and Investigation Directorate officials intercepted the suspects on the runway after receiving a tip-off regarding suspicious movement near an Emirates Airlines flight arriving from Dubai. During a search, authorities discovered 80 gold bars, each weighing approximately 117 grams, concealed inside the suspects' shoes. The total estimated market value of the seized gold is Tk16.25 crore.

Investigators are questioning the workers to identify the source of the gold, uncover potential accomplices, and dismantle the smuggling network operating within the airport.
