Dhaka faces severe air pollution crisis
Dhaka is experiencing a severe air pollution crisis, ranking among the most polluted cities globally according to data from the Swiss-based monitoring organization IQAir. Recent Air Quality Index (AQI) readings have placed the city in the ‘unhealthy’ category, with scores ranging between 168 and 178.
In global rankings, Dhaka has fluctuated between the fifth and sixth most polluted cities. Other highly affected cities include Lahore, Pakistan, which has topped the list, as well as Singapore, Mumbai, and New Delhi.
Health experts warn that high levels of fine particulate matter (PM2.5) pose significant risks to residents. Vulnerable groups, including children, the elderly, and individuals with respiratory issues like asthma, are advised to limit outdoor exposure and wear high-quality masks to mitigate health impacts.
