Dhaka police arrest man after viral sidewalk assault video

Police have arrested Khalid Hasan, a 35-year-old graphic designer, following a viral video showing him assaulting a man on a sidewalk in Dhaka's Dhanmondi area. The victim, identified as 48-year-old Shaheed Abdullah Al Masud, reportedly suffers from mental illness. The assault occurred after allegations surfaced that Abdullah had inappropriately touched a 23-year-old woman.

In response to the incident, Assistant Sub-Inspector Abdul Hai was withdrawn from his post for negligence of duty after being seen standing by while the assault took place. The victim's relative, who intervened to protect the woman and was subsequently arrested by police, has criticized the authorities, stating that the incident might not have received attention if it had not gone viral on social media.
