Dhaka police detain four for defacing Rabindranath Tagore graffiti
Four individuals, including ANM Ayas, the member secretary of the Rashtra Sanglap Forum, have been detained for questioning after a graffiti portrait of Nobel laureate Rabindranath Tagore was defaced with black ink in Dhaka.
The incident occurred in the Segunbagicha area in front of the Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy. The mural was part of a public beautification initiative by the Dhaka South City Corporation. Social media footage showed a woman using a brush to smear ink over the artwork.
Authorities have filed charges under sections of the penal code including criminal conspiracy, spreading enmity between different groups, and hurting religious sentiments. The defacement took place shortly before the Sharadiya Durga Puja festival, raising concerns regarding potential communal unrest and social harmony.
