Dhaka University faces controversy over Jinnah photos in DUCSU archive

A controversy has emerged at Dhaka University following the reopening of the Dhaka University Central Students' Union (DUCSU) archive on September 13. The archive includes historical photographs and documents, such as images of Pakistan's founder, Muhammad Ali Jinnah, and reports regarding his 1948 stance on Urdu as the sole state language.

On September 14, a former student tore several photographs of Jinnah in protest. Subsequent demonstrations saw students placing images of Jinnah and other controversial figures on the archive floor to express dissent. Student organizations have demanded the removal of the images, arguing they conflict with the history and spirit of the Liberation War.

The university administration has formed a five-member investigation committee to look into the incident. While some groups call for the removal of the materials, others emphasize the importance of preserving historical records, including those of controversial figures, to provide a complete understanding of the region's political history.
