Dhaka University calls for tobacco-free campus as U.S. and DMP discuss security
The Dhaka University Journalists Association (DUJA) has called for the strict enforcement of the Smoking and Tobacco Products (Control) Act 2005 to ensure a tobacco-free campus. During a discussion meeting held at the University of Dhaka, participants emphasized the legal obligation to prohibit smoking in public places and educational institutions, noting that the law also restricts tobacco sales within 100 meters of schools and hospitals.
Separately, a high-level delegation from the United States Embassy, led by Chargé d'Affaires Trishita Mawla, met with Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Commissioner Mosleh Uddin Ahmed. The meeting focused on strengthening bilateral cooperation regarding law enforcement, diplomatic area security, and technological capacity building. The U.S. delegation praised the professionalism of the DMP’s SWAT and SPEAR teams, particularly noting their contributions to international peacekeeping missions. Both parties expressed interest in continued training support for specialized units, including bomb disposal and K-9 squads.
