Dhanteras traditions and auspicious metal purchases
Dhanteras, also known as Dhanatrayodashi, marks the beginning of the five-day Diwali festival. The occasion is centered on the worship of Lord Dhanvantari, the deity of Ayurveda and health, alongside Goddess Lakshmi and Lord Kuber.
Tradition dictates that purchasing metal items on this day brings prosperity and well-being to the household. According to mythological beliefs, Lord Dhanvantari emerged from the churning of the ocean holding a brass pot, making brass utensils particularly auspicious.
Commonly purchased items include gold and silver jewelry or coins, as well as brass, copper, and bronze utensils. Copper is highly valued for religious rituals, while silver is considered a symbol of prosperity. Some families also choose to purchase practical items like brooms to welcome good fortune.
