TVK faces critical test in Tamil Nadu Madurantakam and Dharapuram by-elections
The upcoming by-elections in the Madurantakam and Dharapuram constituencies of Tamil Nadu have become a critical test for the ruling Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) party, led by C. Joseph Vijay. The contests are characterized by intense multi-cornered competition involving the DMK, AIADMK, CPI, and Naam Tamilar Katchi.
In Dharapuram, TVK has fielded P. Sathyabama, who previously won the seat on an AIADMK ticket before resigning to join TVK. This decision has drawn criticism from political opponents, including Congress MP Karti Chidambaram, who argued that the party should have prioritized its own cadre over former members of other parties. The seat is also seeing heavy campaigning from the DMK, which has deployed senior leaders to secure the constituency.
In Madurantakam, TVK General Secretary Aadhav Arjuna has launched sharp attacks against the DMK and AIADMK, alleging voter bribery and corruption. Meanwhile, TVK candidates K. Maragatham Kumaravel and P. Sathyabama face local scrutiny following their recent party shifts. The results of these by-elections are expected to significantly impact the TVK's legislative strength in the state assembly.
