DHH announces ‘Pencils Down’ approach to manual coding at Rails World
At the Rails World 2026 keynote in Austin, Ruby on Rails creator David Heinemeier Hansson (DHH) introduced the concept of ‘Pencils Down,’ signaling a shift away from manual coding as a primary professional activity. DHH stated that for most programmers and companies, writing code by hand is no longer economically productive.
He compared this transition to the invention of the Kodak Brownie camera, which shifted the role of portrait painters toward new artistic directions. DHH suggested that with the advent of advanced AI models like Claude Opus 4.5, developers are moving from manual implementation to managing autonomous agents that handle the coding process.
At his company, 37signals, manual coding has become an exception rather than the rule. When bugs occur, the focus is on fixing the ‘machine’ or the ‘factory’—the AI agents and instructions—rather than just patching the code. This shift is also reflected in 37signals’ HEY email service, which is transitioning from a web app to native front-end apps with a Rust backend to leverage the efficiency of AI-driven development.
