Dhiraj Bommadevara sets Asian Games record in archery qualification

At the 2026 Asian Games in Japan, Indian archer Dhiraj Bommadevara set a new Asian Games and national record in the men’s recurve qualification round. Scoring 698 out of a possible 720, Bommadevara surpassed the previous record of 690 held by South Korea’s Lee Woo Seok. His performance earned him the top seed in the individual event and a bye into the second round.

In the men’s team qualification, India finished second with 2039 points, trailing South Korea, which secured the Indian team a bye into the pre-quarterfinals. Other Indian archers Neeraj Chauhan and Yashdeep Bhoge finished 20th and 25th respectively in the individual recurve event.

In the women’s compound event, Chikitha Taniparthi topped the individual standings with a score of 705. The Indian women’s team secured second place in the qualification round with 2099 points, tied with China for the top spot. Other Indian competitors included Jyothi Surekha Vennam in 13th place and Prithika Pradeep in 20th place.

Other Indian sporting updates from the games include the men’s sabre fencing team reaching the quarter-finals after defeating the Philippines, and the women’s foil team advancing to the quarter-finals following a win against Indonesia. In athletics, Tejaswin Shankar reached second place in the decathlon after topping the long jump event.
