DHL to transport Atlantic cargo via wind-powered sailing vessels

Logistics giant DHL has announced a partnership with the French startup VELA to transport cargo across the Atlantic using wind-powered sailing vessels. The initiative aims to significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions, potentially cutting them by up to 99 percent compared to air freight.

The vessels will be 67-meter trimarans constructed from aluminum and carbon fiber, capable of carrying approximately 415 tons. These ships will rely entirely on wind for propulsion, using auxiliary engines only for port maneuvering and solar panels to provide electricity for the crew and onboard systems.

While faster than traditional sailing ships, these vessels will take up to two weeks to cross the Atlantic, as they must follow optimal wind patterns rather than the shortest routes. DHL intends to use this service primarily for high-value goods, such as pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, and wine, for clients seeking to minimize their carbon footprint. Commercial operations are expected to begin in 2027.
