Dhruv Rathee faces bailable warrant in 2018 defamation case
A Delhi court has issued bailable warrants against YouTuber Dhruv Rathee in connection with an eight-year-old criminal defamation case. The order was passed by Judicial Magistrate Rahul Jain at the Saket Court after a process server reported that Rathee’s Gurugram residence was found locked during an attempt to serve a summons.
The legal dispute stems from a May 2018 video titled ‘BJP IT Cell Part 2’, in which Rathee allegedly made false and defamatory claims regarding Vikas Pandey, founder of the social media page ‘I Support Narendra Modi’. Pandey alleged that the video falsely claimed he had offered 50 lakh rupees to a mediator to retract allegations against the BJP IT cell. The case also involved Arvind Kejriwal, who had retweeted the video in 2018; Kejriwal later acknowledged to the Supreme Court that retweeting the content was a mistake.
Rathee, who primarily resides in Austria, had recently been in India to participate in protests. Following his departure, he announced his arrival in London and called for an international demonstration at Parliament Square to protest alleged electoral irregularities in India. The court has scheduled the next hearing for October 31.
