DHS admits voter investigation system mistakenly flagged U.S. citizens
The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has acknowledged in federal court that its Unlawful Voter Initiative, designed to identify noncitizen voters, has resulted in inaccuracies. Officials admitted that the system can mistakenly flag U.S. citizens as noncitizens. In one instance in Nevada, an initial report of 15,903 potential noncitizens was revised to 185, all of whom were confirmed to be U.S. citizens.
Regarding election day presence, DHS officials stated they have no plans to deploy Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers to patrol polling places en masse. However, Secretary Markwayne Mullin noted that agents could still be deployed for specific tasks, such as responding to threats or executing existing warrants. This has caused concern among civil rights organizations representing minority voters.
In related legal developments, Attorney General Todd Blanche announced federal charges against 10 individuals in Minnesota for alleged illegal voting. Meanwhile, the watchdog group Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington (CREW) has filed a lawsuit alleging the administration failed to provide evidence or methodology to support claims that hundreds of thousands of noncitizens are registered to vote.
