DHS announces arrests of non-citizens for illegal voting
The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has announced the arrests of two non-citizens accused of illegal voting in American elections.
In El Paso, Texas, Ludwig Uriel Espejo-Carrillo, a Mexican national and green card holder, was arrested by Homeland Security Investigations. He is charged with unlawful voting and making a false claim to U.S. citizenship regarding his participation in an election in 2015. Espejo-Carrillo remains in ICE custody pending deportation.
In Indianapolis, Indiana, Helda Araceli Mendez-Merida, a Guatemalan national, was arrested by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). Officials stated she allegedly voted in a federal election. Mendez-Merida reportedly entered the U.S. through Arizona in 2015 and had a final order of removal issued against her in 2019.
DHS Secretary Markwayne Mullin characterized these actions as a threat to the republic, stating, “We cannot and will not allow the votes of American citizens to be canceled out by non-citizens illegally voting in our elections.”
