DHS disputes Tlaib claims regarding fatal Michigan car crash

A dispute has emerged between U.S. Representative Rashida Tlaib and the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) regarding a fatal car crash in Grand Rapids, Michigan, involving an undocumented immigrant.

Representative Tlaib stated that Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents killed Mario David Coronado Juarez by pursuing him in an unmarked vehicle, causing a fatal crash. She noted that Juarez had lived and worked in Michigan for seven years.

DHS rejected these claims, stating that ICE officers attempted to stop a vehicle registered to a known criminal illegal alien with multiple alcohol-related driving offenses. According to DHS, the driver fled the stop at speeds exceeding 100 miles per hour. Officials stated that ICE officers immediately discontinued the enforcement action in the interest of public safety rather than pursuing the vehicle.

Local police reported that the vehicle eventually crashed into a tree and caught fire. Juarez was pronounced dead at the scene. DHS noted that Juarez had been previously removed by Border Patrol in 2021 before illegally re-entering the United States.
