DHS offers $3,000 stipend to unaccompanied migrant children for self-deportation

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) is offering unaccompanied migrant children a $3,000 stipend to voluntarily return to their home countries. According to DHS officials, the incentive is available to minors in government custody who are at least 14 years old and have no known gang affiliations.

This represents a $500 increase from the $2,500 incentive offered last year. DHS Secretary Markwayne Mullin stated that the initiative is part of an effort to rescue children and prevent their exploitation by smugglers and traffickers.

The policy has drawn criticism from immigration advocacy groups. These organizations have raised concerns regarding the federal government's recent decision to assemble its own team of attorneys to represent migrant children in court, following the administration's decision to cut ties with previous advocacy groups that provided legal services. Critics argue that the government should not act as both the entity seeking deportation and the legal representative for the children involved.
