DHS terminates Temporary Protected Status for Venezuela and 12 other nations
The U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has announced the immediate termination of Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for citizens of Venezuela and 12 other nations. The affected countries include Haiti, Syria, Yemen, Afghanistan, Cameroon, Nepal, Honduras, Nicaragua, South Sudan, Burma, Somalia, and Ethiopia.
In a formal announcement, the DHS warned that individuals with terminated status must leave the United States or face deportation. The administration justifies this move by stating that the extraordinary conditions, such as natural disasters or political crises, that originally warranted the protections have subsided.
To facilitate departures, the DHS is offering a self-deportation program through the CBP Home mobile application. This program includes free travel, the waiver of fines related to illegal presence, and a $2,600 departure bonus. Additionally, non-criminal individuals who declare their intent to leave via the app may receive a temporary reduction in ICE detention priority.
