DHS launches voter fraud investigation surge in nine states
The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) is launching a coordinated criminal voter fraud surge initiative, set to begin in early September and run through mid-October. The operation will be conducted by Homeland Security Investigations (HSI), the investigative arm of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).
Targeted investigations will focus on nine states: California, Connecticut, Georgia, Missouri, Nevada, New York, Pennsylvania, Washington, and Wisconsin. HSI agents are authorized to pursue investigative leads, conduct field interviews, and support timely prosecutorial reviews, specifically targeting suspected noncitizen voting.
Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin has moved to position the department as a central force in the administration's efforts to identify election fraud. DHS has also pressured various states to share voter rolls for federal audits and has indicated that grant funding could be withheld from states that refuse to adopt proposed election reforms.
Critics and civil rights groups have raised concerns regarding the timing of the surge, noting that it coincides with the lead-up to the 2026 midterm elections. While Justice Department policy has historically discouraged overt investigative actions close to an election to avoid influencing outcomes, DHS operates under separate authority. Some officials have also questioned the reliability of the data driving the initiative, noting discrepancies between public claims of widespread fraud and internal agency reviews.
