Dhulai River hosts traditional Polo Bawa festival in Kamalganj
The traditional Polo Bawa fishing festival was held at the Mirtinya Bridge area of the Dhulai River in Kamalganj, Moulvibazar. This century-old tradition involves using 'polo'—specialized fishing tools made of bamboo—to catch fish in groups.
Participants from various villages, including Rahimpur, Dharmapur, and Ramchandrapur, gathered at the riverbank to take part in the event. While the primary activity is fishing for various species such as Puti, Tengra, Shol, Rita, and Boal, organizers noted that the main purpose is the communal celebration.
Attendees of all ages, including children and teenagers, participated using both polo tools and nets. The event was preceded by local announcements made with drums to inform the community. Despite the seasonal changes in water levels, the festival continues to serve as a significant cultural gathering for the local fishing community.
