Dia España plans expansion with 200 new stores

Dia España has announced plans for significant growth in the Spanish market following a multi-year transformation process. The supermarket chain aims to open 100 new stores by the end of 2026 and an additional 100 stores in 2027.

Ricardo Álvarez, CEO of Dia España, stated that the company’s recent strategy focused on “sanear antes de crecer” (cleaning up before growing). As a result of this restructuring, approximately 2,300 of the company’s original 3,100 stores have been remodeled to fit a new model featuring formats between 300 and 500 square meters. Álvarez noted that 97% of the chain’s stores are now profitable, with average sales having doubled following three consecutive years of profit.

The company also intends to refinance its debt in 2027. This move is expected to provide greater guarantees for its expansion efforts and potentially allow the company to resume paying dividends to shareholders.
