Diabatá recycling plant fire causes heavy smoke in Thessaloniki

A large fire broke out early Monday morning, October 19, at a recycling facility located in the industrial area of Diabatá, Thessaloniki. The blaze occurred in an outdoor area situated between the old national road, Hellenic Petroleum facilities, and the Egnatia Odos.

Thick smoke from the fire spread across a large portion of Thessaloniki, creating suffocating conditions and a strong odor throughout much of the city. The nature of the materials at the site, which include large quantities of plastics and bulky items, has made firefighting efforts difficult and time-consuming.

Firefighting forces, including 18 firefighters and six vehicles, were deployed to the scene, with assistance from the Delta Municipality providing water tankers and heavy machinery. While authorities reported that the fire has been brought under control, crews remain on-site to continue the operation, as complete extinguishment is expected to take significant time. There are no residential areas in the immediate vicinity of the fire.
