Hungary and Greece face wildfires and drought

Hungary and Greece are facing significant challenges due to extreme weather conditions. In Hungary, a prolonged drought has severely impacted the water levels of the Tisza River and its tributaries. Consequently, new water restrictions have been implemented across the Tisza-Körös-völgy region, primarily affecting non-communal water usage and reducing available water for agricultural purposes by 50 percent.

Simultaneously, Hungary has dealt with a high volume of fires this summer. Reports indicate that over 5,000 fires have occurred, with many caused by human negligence. In Greece, extreme heatwaves have fueled numerous wildfires across various regions, including Thessaly and Laconia, requiring extensive deployment of ground and aerial firefighting resources.

In addition to wildfires, Greece has experienced urban fire incidents, such as a blaze in a residential building in Székesfehérvár (noted in Hungarian reports) and various forest fires. The combination of heat and drought continues to pose a high risk for further fire outbreaks across both nations.
