Diabetes and chronic disease management initiatives in Mayotte and Madagascar

In Mayotte, the RéDiab organization is launching a series of health actions to combat the rising threat of type 2 diabetes. Data from the EpiMay 2025 nutritional survey indicates high vulnerability in the region, with obesity affecting nearly half of women and one quarter of men. To address the risks of late diagnosis, a campaign titled “Même quand ça va, je vérifie” (Even when I feel fine, I check) will promote early screening. Initiatives include a professional meeting on November 2, a free screening program in partner pharmacies throughout November, and a health village in Chirongui on November 14 to provide glycemic checks and personalized advice.

In Madagascar, the high cost of treating chronic conditions such as diabetes, hypertension, and cardiovascular diseases is placing a significant financial burden on households. Medical professionals note that costs vary depending on the stage of the disease and whether patients use generic or brand-name medications. For a patient with type 2 diabetes, monthly expenses for consultations, glucose tests, and tablets can range from 60,000 to 80,000 ariary, while insulin users face additional costs. While lifestyle changes like diet and exercise are essential components of treatment, the financial strain often forces patients to make difficult choices regarding their medication.
