Diabetes and retinal disease research highlights new imaging and progression insights
Recent medical research and technological advancements are providing new insights into the relationship between diabetes and vision loss. Ultra-widefield (UWF) retinal imaging is emerging as a critical diagnostic tool. Unlike conventional standard field photography, which covers 45 degrees or less, UWF imaging uses scanning laser ophthalmoscopes to capture approximately 82% of the retina. Studies indicate that peripheral lesions detected through this method are associated with a nearly five-fold increased risk of diabetic retinopathy progression.
Additionally, research from Thomas Jefferson University has examined the impact of Type 2 diabetes on primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG). A longitudinal study comparing eyes with diabetes (but no diabetic retinopathy) to non-diabetic eyes found that the diabetic group exhibited slower circumpapillary retinal nerve fiber layer thinning and relatively preserved outer retinal thickness compared to the POAG-only group.
