United Kingdom launches Foundayo daily weight-loss and diabetes pill

The United Kingdom has become the first European nation to launch Foundayo, a daily oral medication designed to treat Type 2 diabetes and assist with weight management. Developed by the American pharmaceutical company Eli Lilly, the drug contains the active ingredient orforglipron.

Foundayo is licensed for individuals with a body mass index (BMI) of 30 or higher, or those with a BMI between 27 and 30 who possess at least one weight-related health condition. It is also indicated for patients with poorly controlled Type 2 diabetes to help regulate blood sugar levels. The medication is taken once daily without specific food or water restrictions, following a graduated dosage schedule that increases over several months.

Initially available via private prescription in certain pharmacies, Eli Lilly is currently working with the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) to evaluate the drug for potential rollout through the National Health Service (NHS). Pharmacists have noted the pill is a significant alternative for patients who are unable or unwilling to use injectable GLP-1 treatments, though they have issued warnings regarding the risk of counterfeit or unlicensed versions of the medication.
