Diabetes awareness: symptoms, risks, and prevention strategies

Diabetes is currently ranked as the seventh most deadly disease globally. While Type 1 diabetes is genetic, Type 2 diabetes is increasingly prevalent, particularly among men aged 30 to 65.

Common warning signs of Type 2 diabetes include dark skin patches (indicating insulin sensitivity issues), frequent urination, excessive thirst, uncontrolled appetite, dizziness, and numbness in the limbs due to peripheral neuropathy. High blood sugar levels can also lead to fatigue, mood swings, and increased risks of depression and anxiety in men.

Prevention of Type 2 diabetes focuses on lifestyle modifications. Key strategies include maintaining a healthy weight, engaging in 30 to 60 minutes of daily physical activity—such as walking or cycling—and adopting a nutritious diet. Avoiding high-calorie foods like processed snacks, sugary drinks, and fatty meats in favor of fruits and vegetables can significantly reduce risk.
