Diabetes care and cardiovascular risks highlighted in Romania

The Romanian Diabetes Forum recently marked its seventh anniversary at the Romanian Senate, bringing together healthcare professionals, pharmaceutical industry representatives, and patient associations. Discussions focused on the evolution of diabetes care in Romania, emphasizing the need for improved access to modern treatments, the development of a National Diabetes Registry, and better cooperation between specialists.

Patient advocates, including representatives from ASCOTID Mureș, highlighted challenges regarding equitable access to medical services across different regions and age groups. They stressed the importance of involving patient experiences in the creation of public health policies and improving therapeutic education.

In a separate regional report, medical professionals at the Târgu Jiu Emergency County Hospital noted that approximately 4,900 patients visited their diabetes clinic between January and August 2026. Doctors warned that prolonged high blood sugar levels significantly increase the risk of cardiovascular complications, such as hypertension, atherosclerosis, myocardial infarction, and stroke. Medical staff are urging patients to maintain regular monitoring of glucose, blood pressure, and cholesterol levels to mitigate these risks.
