Diabetes medication consumption rises 22% since 2022
Diabetes medication consumption has risen by 21.9% between 2022 and 2025, according to data from the National Health System. Total prescriptions for diabetes-related drugs increased from 53.87 million units in 2022 to 65.69 million in 2025.
Within this group, GLP-1 receptor agonists saw a 57.1% increase in consumption. Specifically, semaglutide usage surged by 140.5%, rising from approximately 1.58 million units in 2022 to 3.80 million in 2025. Dulaglutide also saw significant use, reaching 1.13 million units in 2025.
Regarding dietary management, Christopher Gardner, a nutrition professor at Stanford University, notes that the distinction between white and whole-grain bread may not significantly impact blood glucose levels. He explains that because both types are processed into fine powders, the body digests them similarly. Gardner suggests that the primary metabolic concern is refined carbohydrates and added sugars rather than complex carbohydrates, recommending whole grains like freekeh or millet, legumes, and unsaturated fats to ensure more stable energy levels.
