Diabetes patients in Sweden face rising medication costs

Changes to Sweden’s high-cost protection for pharmaceuticals have led to significant challenges for individuals living with diabetes. According to data from the Diabetes Barometer 2026, approximately eight to nine percent of members in regions such as Sörmland and Västernorrland have either foregone collecting their prescribed medications or have been forced to borrow money to cover the costs.

For those who have skipped medication, nearly sixty percent report a negative impact on their health. Patients have noted increased stress regarding finances, which in turn negatively affects blood sugar and blood pressure levels.

Health advocates and organizations, including the Swedish Diabetes Association, have warned that these rising costs threaten treatment compliance. There is also a growing concern for regional healthcare authorities; as patients struggle to afford preventative medication, the risk of serious complications—such as cardiovascular disease, kidney damage, and vision impairment—increases, potentially leading to a higher demand for expensive hospital care and emergency regional interventions.
