Diabetes rates reach record highs in Denmark

Diabetes rates in Denmark have reached record levels, with 384,600 people currently living with the condition. In 2025, an average of 78 people were diagnosed daily. The increase is primarily driven by type 2 diabetes, which has seen a 42 percent rise in prevalence since 2015.

Significant geographic disparities exist across the country. In municipalities such as Ishøj and Lolland, over 10 percent of the population lives with the disease. Other areas, including Middelfart, Assens, and Billund, have also experienced some of the highest growth rates in recent years, whereas the Copenhagen metropolitan area shows more moderate development.

The Diabetesforeningen has expressed deep concern regarding this trend, noting that diabetes is a life-altering chronic illness that can lead to permanent damage to the eyes, kidneys, and heart, as well as increased mortality.
