Diabetes research and prevention discussed at Italian medical congress
At the 31st National Congress of the Italian Society of Diabetology in Rimini, researchers presented several clinical developments for treating diabetes. For type 1 diabetes, studies are exploring ways to restore insulin-producing cells or utilize muscle tissue for glycemic control. One notable experimental treatment, zimislecel, uses pancreatic islets derived from pluripotent stem cells infused into the portal vein to reach the liver. In a study published in the New England Journal of Medicine, participants showed the appearance of C-peptide after infusion.
Other research focuses on type 2 diabetes, including the use of dorzagliatin to target glucokinase and the investigation of icovamenib to support residual beta cell function. Clinical protocols such as PROGRESS and RELIEVE are also being studied for their role in muscle-based glycemic management.
In addition to clinical research, a health conference in Senigallia focused on diabetes prevention and complications. Specialists addressed the management of the disease, as well as specific risks such as vision complications and nephrosis, emphasizing the importance of early diagnosis and regular monitoring.
