Diabetes research and prevention efforts expand in Germany
The Fr1da study, led by researchers at the Helmholtz Munich Institute for Diabetes Research, is expanding its efforts to detect Type 1 diabetes in children aged two to ten. As of May 2026, the study has extended its reach to five additional German federal states: Berlin, Brandenburg, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Saxony-Anhalt, and Thuringia. The initiative aims to identify specific islet autoantibodies in the blood during the asymptomatic early stages of the disease to improve understanding and intervention.
Separately, the German Diabetes Society (DDG) is emphasizing the importance of identifying prediabetes to prevent Type 2 diabetes. With over 9 million people in Germany living with Type 2 diabetes, experts note that elevated blood sugar levels often precede a full diagnosis. Professor Julia Szendrödi, President of the DDG, stated that prediabetes provides a window of opportunity for targeted lifestyle interventions to reduce the risk of progression to Type 2 diabetes.
