Diabetes research: Gene editing fails to stop cell rejection as AI targets misdiagnosis
Researchers at Koç University have investigated using CRISPR-Cas9 gene-editing technology to protect transplanted pancreatic beta cells from immune rejection in Type 1 diabetes patients. The study focused on disabling the RNLS and HIVEP2 genes to create beta-cell spheroids more resistant to autoimmune destruction. While disabling HIVEP2 did not significantly impact cell function, the loss of RNLS caused a modest reduction in insulin secretion in mouse cells. Ultimately, the single-gene edits were insufficient to prevent immune rejection in immunocompetent mice.
In a separate development regarding diabetes management, Breakthrough T1D and IQVIA have utilized artificial intelligence to address the frequent misdiagnosis of Type 1 diabetes as Type 2 diabetes in adults. Research indicates that up to 20 percent of Type 1 patients are misdiagnosed. The AI algorithm identified specific trends in misdiagnosed individuals, noting they were typically younger, weighed less, were less likely to have obesity or high blood pressure, and were more likely to be Caucasian.
